El Carrito

Performance Event

Se vende, se compra! Come to El Carrito, we will be preparing totopos and Doritos for everyone to have a little taste of what “decolonisation” might be.

Totopos are widely known as tortilla chips – they are an indigenous Mexican staple derived from the Nahuatl word for “toasted/crunchy thing.” Through colonization, dictatorship, slavery, and war, indigenous cultures have survived and been integrated into everyday Mexican life, becoming part of the contemporary national identity. You can find them in superstores, street stalls, and restaurants; they are just as ubiquitous in Mexico as Doritos.

This work is a proposal to move past ideas of “returning to indigenous ways” and towards a shift that is grounded in the realities of cultural integration and technological innovation.
